Burmese Goddess Holding Hair



This goddess, Phra Mae Thorani, was hand carved from teak wood, then painted. She is said to have protected Buddha as he meditated under the Bodhi tree by drowning out the demonic Mara, who came to tempt Buddha, by ringing out the cool waters of detachment from her hair. Her name translates to Lady Mother Earth and is a frequent symbol representing water and earth. Myanmar (Burma).
