Hand carved mask from Indonesia. A traditional Batik dying process is used on this wood. A wax is applied to all the negative space and then the piece is dunked into a dye bath where only the unwaxed portions of the wood can absorb the dye. Then, the piece is dipped into a boiling tub to melt the wax off. This process is repeated for each color you see on the piece. An incredible process that requires a focused mind and careful hands.
