Beautiful old iron kris from Java, Indonesia. Semar mesem is a character in Javanese mythology. Frequently appears in wayang shadow plays. One of the “punokawan”, though is in fact divine and very wise. He is the dhayang (guardian spirit) of Java. Therefore he is also the most sacred figure of the wayang set. He is the god Sang Hyang Ismaya in human form.
The name Semar is from the Javanese word samar (“dim, obscure, mysterious”). Often referred to with the honorific, “Kyai Lurah Semar” (“the venerable chief”). One piece only.
