Hand carved and hand painted wood Rangda mask. The hair section is made of horse hair.
Rangda in old Javanese and Balinese language means “widow”. Rangda may associated with Durga. Also identified with the Hindu warrior goddess Kali, transformation and protection.
While Rangda is fearsome, she is also considered a protective force in certain parts of Bali. Just like Kali is seen as a benevolent mother goddess of fertility and destruction in Northeastern India in Assam, Tripura. The colors associated with her — white, black and red — are identical with those associated with Kali. Her iconography is similar to that of both Kali and Chamunda, who are closely related.
Rangda was in the legend of Calon Arang. And also the legend of divorced and exiled Javanese queen Mahendradatta. The battle between Barong and Rangda represents the eternal battle between good and evil.
The Balinese believe that disease and misfortune are the results of an imbalance between the forces of good and evil. The performance of the Barong and Rangda dances are part of the sacred ceremonies, meant to maintain the balance between the two.
Old piece with one visible damage tooth, and some paint wears off mark. Otherwise a pretty good collecting piece. Sell as is. One of a kind. Originally from Bali.
