Description
An old brass or bronze with copper repousse panel featuring Shiva, and attendants under an arch. Originally made in Tanjavur area in South India. The panel is constructed from two sheets, one with the repousse scene, and another flat back panel with an integral loop for suspension; the two sheets are conjoined and folded along the edges.
The image depicts a four-armed Shiva wearing a knee length garment with skulls along the hem. In each hand are attributes, including a sword and trident. At his side is a ram, and the goddess Parvati. The ornate arch has two pillars surmounted with avian creatures. In the top corner of the panel is a recumbent cow, which represent Nandi, and a Shiva lingam, symbols of Lord Shiva. A darker tone patina covers this devotional piece. Magnificent details and depth of this plaque.
