Description

A serene seated meditation Buddha, in 12th century Angkor Wat style. This sculpture is a masterful realization of Buddhist dharma. Seated in yogic meditation, one leg resting on the other. The highly developed musculature follows Indian Kusana and early Gupta traditions. It is arguably the earliest demonstration of this Buddha figure type in mainland Southeast Asia. The imposing scale and robust physique point to an early date. In good condition, and a serene one of a kind piece.

Sitting atop a double lotus base. His hands are in the Dhyana mudra, the gesture of Meditation. The hand gesture that promotes the energy of meditation, deep contemplation and unity with higher energy. Dhyana that is also called meditation Mudra and it is called Samadhi or Yoga Mudra, it is most commonly used in Mahayana tradition of Buddhism. A way of humanity for all living beings. It is stated that Buddha used to practice this Mudra before Enlightenment.

The Khmer Empire ruled the territory which based on modern Cambodia, but rather larger, from the 9th to the 13th century. The most celebrated examples are found in Angkor, which served as the seat of the empire. Khmer stone sculpture did not employ any stella on the back of the figure for support. As the result, broken arms, hands or ankles attested to the vulnerability of this format.
