Description

Mid 19th century Bandaji cabinet. Original Brass hardware with four drawers along the upper section. As well as all the doors on the cabinet. A rare Korean Tamo ash wood chest with beautiful wood grain shows throughout the whole cabinet.

The Korean name bandaji (means “half close”) derives from the hinged door in the front of this chest. This type of chest was one of the most essential pieces of furniture in a Korean household. Clothes, documents and valuables would be stored inside while folded blankets would be placed on top during the day (which is why we call it a “”blanket chest”” in English). This altar style cabinet, with its decorated fittings and metalwork, was produced in the northern provinces of the Korean peninsula.

Tamo Ash, Japanese Ash, Manchurian Ash. Tamo, also called damo, shioji, and yachidamah. It produce figured wood that resembles peanut shells laid side by side. Tamo trees develop this peanut figure when strong vines encircle their trunks. This girdling restricts the flow of nutrients. So the tree grows in spurts, and the grain shows it.
