Description
This is a Japanese lacquered wooden Komainu shishi lion mask. Hand painted with red, black and gold color. It was made during the 1970’s. Which also called komainu, these lion dogs are often depicted as guardian statues outside of temples. They are also famous for shishi-mai, or lion dance (which has a Chinese equivalent). This beautiful hand carved, hand crafted piece can be used for room decoration or shows and dances. The mouth opens and closes on a wooden hinge and the ears are adjustable/removable.
Still in good condition considering the time and age. Imperfections in wood base and lacquer. Some scratches and wear due to age. Kindly check photos for better condition description.
