Description

A prayer wheel is a cylindrical wheel. With a mantra written in Tibetan language, on the outside of the wheel traditionally. The most commonly used is the mantra Om mani padme hum. Also the eight auspicious symbols Ashtamangala. At the core of the cylinder is a “life tree”. Often made of wood or metal, with mantras written on or wrapped around it.

The first prayer wheels which are driven by wind, have been used since the fourth century. According to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition on the lineage texts, spinning a prayer wheel will have the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayers.
