Hand carved red lacquer hardwood Hotei standing on his bag. A very joyful appearance on his face. Two arms up over his head holding pearls in his hands. Hotei is also commonly referred to as “fat Buddha” “happy Buddha” or “laughing Buddha” due to his size and demeanor. It is believed that rubbing his belly will bring luck and prosperity.

Hotei, in Japanese mythology, one of the Shichi-fuku-jin. This popular figure is depicted frequently in contemporary crafts as a cheerful, contented Buddhist monk with a large exposed belly, often accompanied by children.
