Hand carved earth god from one huge piece of elm wood. Fude Zhengshen (福德正神 Righteous God of Virtue and Blessing) is a god of prosperity in Chinese mythology. Also commonly known as the earth god. With a kind and generous facial appearance. A very detailed carved old sculpture that shows both the carving and the wood grain very well. A very rare beautiful god sculpture that has no paint on in this case. Which allow us to see the artist eye of carve lines interwoven with the wood grain. There are tiny thin cracks from the bottom of the sculpture to its feet area due to the weather and previous owning preservation. Though you can barely see them and they don’t effect the stability of the sculpture. Condition shows as in the pictures.
He is often pictured a white-haired, kindly old man. He is sometimes shown holding nugget of gold and wearing clothes embroidered with the character for longevity. His name is first recorded in a fifth-century Taoist scripture that has been unearthed from the Caves Dun-Huang.
There are different opinions as to the prototype of the god, One say he is the official in charge of agriculture under the ancient emperor Yao. Others say he originated in Chang Fu-De, a benevolent tax official of the Chou dynasty. Who sympathized people’s hardships and was later honored as a god.
Because of his humble status, the earth god is closer and more accessible to the people. Every village had a shrine for him. Families engaged in business worshiped him on the second and sixteenth of each lunar month, and the second day of the second month is his birthday.
