Description
A very large Asian Burmese gilt and lacquered wood bamboo offering vessel, container adorned with glass, and jewels colored gems with a conical removable top. This Burmese temple offering covered vessel sits atop a build in hintha bird stand, with a red lacquer interior, richly decorated with gold leaf and glass “gems” on the exterior and red in the interior and four hintha birds at the bottom stand. The dragon craft work is amazing in the way that the dragon all look indivisually flown above the vessel. Beyond detailed glass, gems work alongside with the carving work on the surface of the vessel. Above all, everything were done by hands of artists during early 20th century.
Bamboo is a notoriously difficult medium. It must be split by hand into ever finer strips before it is woven into the required shape. For the best lacquer ware one-year-old cow dung must be obtained, filtered through strainer and applied to the woven bamboo. Second-grade alternatives involve the use of Irrawaddy mud, burnt peanut shells, more recent cow dung and so on. To this substratum the sticky lacquer must be applied in up to twenty layers, with lengthy drying periods between each application. Even a routine lacquer vessel may take seven months to produce and special piece two years or even longer. Given all this, we can only marvel all the exquisite lacquer items which eventually emerge.
Condition showns as in the pictures. Some loss of gold leaf paint and gems, and some repair marks on the bottom stand area. Overall good condition for its age. A rare amazing museum quality piece.
