Opium is a powerful drug. Heated opium was placed in the lidded well of this ornate water pipe. Then people inhaled the fumes through the pipe. Made from copper. In China, opium had been used medicinally. Ever since Arab traders brought it from the Middle East in the 600’s or 700’s. Different material and style of opium pipes reflected the wealth or poverty of the owners. Beautiful complete piece. Made in China.
