Description

This striking sculpture features a hand-carved wood Hotei—popularly known as the Happy or Laughing Buddha—masterfully coaxed from a single, rustic tree log. The artist intentionally preserved the raw, weathered exterior of the timber, beautifully framing the figure to evoke the serene imagery of Hotei meditating within a mountain cave. With a wide, infectious smile and a joyful presence, this unique piece is designed to bring warmth, happiness, and positive energy into any space.

Hotei originates from the 10th-century Chinese Chan Buddhist monk Budai (meaning “cloth sack”), who wandered with a benevolent nature and a large, protruding belly. Over the centuries, he came to be venerated across Asia as an incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha.

By the 16th century, Japanese mythology embraced him as one of the Shichi-fuku-jin (the “Seven Gods of Luck”), a group of deities embodying good fortune and happiness. Caricatured globally as the “Laughing Buddha,” —continue to depict him as a cheerful, deeply contented figure whose iconic smile spreads joy and prosperity.

Crafted from the organic contours of natural wood, each piece is entirely one of a kind.

Dimensions: 6.5″ x 11″ x 19.75″
