Guanyin (觀音; 观音) is the East Asian representation of Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion. Her full name, Guanshiyin, translates to “The One Who Perceives the Sounds of the World.”
Many Buddhists believe Guanyin places departing souls into the heart of a lotus and sends them to Sukhāvatī, the Western Pure Land. Scholars and devotees often call her the “most widely beloved Buddhist divinity.” The Lotus Sutra (Pumen chapter) and Kāraṇḍavyūha Sūtra describe her miraculous powers to assist anyone who prays to her.
In Chinese, Guanyin means “Perceiver of All Sounds”—reflecting her ability to hear every prayer and cry for help. While Indian tradition depicts Bodhisattvas as male or genderless, Chinese tradition usually presents Guanyin as female. This gender fluidity stems from her ability to manifest on Earth in whatever form helps others.
