Description

Hand-cast with exquisite detail, this bronze statue captures the powerful presence of the famous Great Buddha at Kotoku-in temple. The figure presents Amida Buddha in deep meditation, hands joined in the Bhairava Mudra. Intricately carved snail-curl hair and serene facial features evoke deep inner peace, while symmetrical monk robes flow outward in delicate, ripple-like folds. The reverse base features impressed character marks. Excellent condition.

About the Original:
Cast in the 13th century, the Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu) stands 11.3 meters tall and weighs 121 tons at Kotoku-in temple. It is Japan’s second-largest bronze Buddha, surpassed only by the statue at Todai-ji in Nara. Rendered in the prestigious Kei school style of master sculptors Kokei and Unkei, the original sculptor remains unknown.

Though natural disasters repeatedly destroyed the original temple shelter during the 14th and 15th centuries, the statue has stood serenely in the open air since 1498—a majestic National Treasure and an enduring symbol of Kamakura.
