Description

A set of two Japanese antique porcelain bowls, lidded, with marks imitating Chinese makers marks during the Ming Chenghua period (成化年製). Though attributed to the Chinese Ming dynasty Chenghua period (1465-1487), these were made in the Arita kiln during the Meiji era, early 19th century or possible earlier.

The Japanese porcelains with this type of mark were made mostly for export purposes after the late 17th century. This was due to China’s export trade with Europe declining as various parts of the country suffered disorder because of the collapse of the Ming dynasty towards mid to late 17th century. The Dutch East Indies Company was impelled to look elsewhere for a fresh source of porcelain. Japanese took over the trade line. The trade in Japanese ceramics prospered during which enormous quantities were shipped to Holland, then on to other European markets. Its been found that this style of porcelain continued to be made at least until the late Meiji era.

These are a beautiful pair of bowls, that have excellent detail and hand painting in traditional style. Price is for both bowls as a set. Only two of these bowls we got. Great for Japanese ceramics collectors.
