Description
Japanese Meiji period wood Sendai tansu made in late 19th century. Hand-cut iron hardware and beautiful made wood drawers. This wood tansu (Likely the wood of keyaki, which similar to zelkova in the west.) featuring a lacquered brown finish that still showing the straight grain on the front of the drawer. The lacquer luster has being applied in multiple layers through the years.
A long upper drawer, followed by three medium sized ones on the left, while the right side comprises of two petite drawers surrounding a central door, the “safe”. Its door opens to reveal four additional petite hidden drawers. The front is fitted with rendered hand-cut iron hardware with floral motifs. The handles on two sides are for relocating or moving purpose. Japanese Meiji period tansu chest circa 1880-1900. Some normal usage mark through the years.
