Javanese Cirebon Style Topeng Mask – Lakshmana

Hand crafted lost wax cast brass topeng Cirebon style dance mask. A delicate details mask of Lakshmana– Rama’s younger brother. Topeng Cirebon (Cirebonese mask dance) is a native art form from Cirebon, Java—spanning parts of West and Central Java. Dancers perform this versatile Javanese dance solo or in groups to tell diverse stories, with each distinct mask driving the meaning and style of their movements.

Lakshmana Mask

This mask represents Lakshmana—Rama’s loyal younger brother in the Hindu epic Ramayana and the human incarnation of Shesha, the lord of serpents.

Craftsmen carved and painted the figure from a single piece of wood. A modest, jewel-toned crown—signifying his royal lineage—sits above a fringe of black curly hair. Fine black lines trace his narrow eyes and cheekbones across a smooth, pink, heart-shaped face, tapering down to a gentle smile with subtle laughter lines. In traditional Indonesian theatre, these refined, elegant features immediately signal Lakshmana’s noble and honorable character to the audience.

The Topeng Tradition

Topeng is a dramatic Indonesian dance form. In a performance, one or more mask-wearing, ornately costumed dancers interpret traditional stories about fabled kings, heroes, and myths, accompanied by a gamelan or other traditional instruments.

Historical accounts state that one of the Wali Sanga—the nine Islamic saints who brought Islam to the Indonesian archipelago—introduced Topeng dance along Java’s northern coast during the sixteenth century.
