Description
Hand carved magnificent Ganesha riding his mount Mooshak. There are also two Ganesha atop a Thai green dragon at the bottom. There are clouds and lotus among and behind Ganesha. A very traditional Thai style carving. With lots of details even when you look close. Old piece originally from Thailand. One of a kind.
Ganesha is often shown riding on or attended by a mouse. The mouse as a mount first appears in written sources in the Matsya Purana and later in the Brahmananda Purana and Ganesha Purana, where Ganesha uses it as his vehicle in his last incarnation.
Ganesha is also described as Omkara or Aumkara, that is having the form of Om. For this reason, Ganesha is considered the bodily incarnation of the entire Cosmos, He who is at the base of all of the phenomenal world.
Ganesha’s image may evoke a sense of prosperity and power and auspiciousness for which fertility is important. His vehicle Mooshika reminds us not to be complacent. The rat may be fertile and unstoppable as a contributor to our wealth, but it is also capable gnawing into our ethics, our morals, our values, the very foundation of our apparently fulfilled lives.
