Description
Hand carved wood Hotei with beautiful gilded gold all over his body, but faded in some area through the years. Very happy appearance on his face. He’s carrying a Ruyi (A kind of jade in the shape we refer it to as you wish) in one hand. Which hangs a bag below the Ruyi, and a stack of gold nuggets on the other end over his shoulder. Stands atop a base of coins and gold, with one of the coin below his bare foot, which indicates the characters of prosperity on the coin.
Hotei, which also commonly referred to as “fat Buddha” “happy Buddha” or “laughing Buddha”due to his size and demeanor. People believe that rubbing his belly will bring luck and prosperity.
Hotei is one of the Shichi-fuku-jin (“Seven Gods of Luck”) in Japanese mythology. A cheerful, contented Buddhist monk with a large exposed belly, often accompanied by children. Tradition relates him to a Chinese monk called Bu-Dai, who is regarded as an incarnation of the bodhisattva (the future Buddha) Maitreya (Miroku in Japanese).
