Jade, also called the “imperial gem”. Used to create many utilitarian and ceremonial objects. Jade has had a significance in the history of the art of the Chinese empire. Which is comparable with that of gold and diamonds in the West.
The jade deposits most used were Khotan in the Western Chinese province of Xinjiang. Also from other parts of China as well, such as Lantian, Shaanxi. There, they found white and greenish nephrite jade in small quarries in the rivers. Jadeite, with its bright emerald-green, pink, lavender, orange and brown colors was imported from Burma to China after 1800. It became as popular as nephrite. While scholars still had strong attachment to nephrite.
