Old Japanese Kashigata cake mold. Hand carved Kashigata sweet mold. Carved in a bamboo scroll shape with cherry blossom. Original store title mark in the back.  Made around 1940’s or 1950’s.

Kashigata are traditional Japanese hand-carved wooden molds that artisans use to shape higashi—a category of low-moisture, traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) made from rice flour, soybean flour, and sugar. Originating in the Edo period (1603–1867), these tools bridge the worlds of culinary craft and fine art; collectors prize them both as functional utensils and as highly detailed works of sculptural art.

How They Work

The Press: Confectioners tightly press a mixture of fine sugar and flour into the hand-carved cavity of the mold.

The Finished Sweet: The molded sweets air-dry until they achieve a delicate, crunchy texture similar to a dry cookie. Hosts frequently serve higashi during traditional tea ceremonies, while others use them as elegant gifts or sacred shrine offerings.
