Description
Lava Stone Shakyamuni Buddha in Dhyana Mudra (Meditation Pose)
The Gesture of Meditation
In the Dhyana Mudra, the right hand rests atop the left with both palms facing upward. The fingers extend fully and rest naturally on one another, while the tips of the thumbs touch to form a light triangle. This sacred shape symbolizes spiritual fire and the Triratna (Three Jewels) of Buddhism: the Buddha, the Dharma (teachings), and the Sangha (community).
As a timeless symbol of deep concentration and introspection, this gesture represents the path to enlightenment and remains a cornerstone of Buddhist iconography and practice.
Across East Asia, stone Buddha sculptures take many forms beyond the temple sanctuary—from reliefs carved directly into outer walls to statues nestled in garden gazebos. Artisans hand-carved this particular statue from natural lava stone for a Javanese temple garden, creating a peaceful focal point for visitors as they stroll through the sanctuary grounds.
This one-of-a-kind statue brings a quiet, serene presence to any outdoor setting. Place it along a garden path, hide it tucked among lush greenery, or incorporate it directly into a stone water feature.
