Description
Old hand carved Chinese marble stone Buddha sculpture. Around 100 years old. Featuring the Buddha standing atop a lotus base. Very serene look on his face. Beautiful and detailed design through out the sculpture. The sculpture is in good condition.
This Buddha is holding Abhayamudra, which is the “gesture of fearlessness”. The right hand is held upright, and the palm is facing outwards. The mudra /gesture was used by Gautama Buddha when attacked by an elephant, subduing it as shown in several frescos and scripts. In Mahayana Buddhism, deities often paired it with another mudrā using the other hand.
