Hand carved red wood Hotei standing on his bag. Hotei is also commonly referred to as “fat Buddha” “happy Buddha” or “laughing Buddha” due to his size and demeanor. It is believed that rubbing his belly will bring luck and prosperity.
Hotei, in Japanese mythology, one of the Shichi-fuku-jin. This popular figure is depicted frequently in contemporary crafts as a cheerful, contented Buddhist monk with a large exposed belly, often accompanied by children.
