Description
This vintage cast brass sculpture depicts Shiva Nataraja, the Hindu deity in his manifestation as the divine cosmic dancer. Captured in a precise Natya Shastra pose, Shiva is enveloped by a traditional ring of flames, standing atop a lotus pedestal.
With his right foot, he tramples the dwarf demon Apasmara (also known as Muyalaka), a powerful symbol of spiritual ignorance, while his left leg is raised in a gesture of liberation. In his upper hands, he holds Agni (the fire of transformation) and the Udukai (drum). His forward hands form the Karana mudra, a sacred gesture intended to dispel negative thoughts, anxiety, and obstacles.
As Nataraja, Shiva performs the Tandava, a cosmic dance encompassing the five divine acts: creation, preservation, destruction, illusion (maya), and salvation. This sculpture beautifully harmonizes the two dualities of his dance: the Lasya, a gentle rhythm associated with creation, and the Ananda Tandava, the vigorous dance of bliss that dissolves weary worldviews. Together, they illustrate the core essence of Shiva’s nature—destroying in order to create, and tearing down to build again.
