Ardhanarishvara translates to : The lord(“shvara”) who is half(“ardha”) woman(“nari”). The figure portrays a perfect marriage – with the bodies of husband (Shiva) and wife (Parvati) harmoniously united as one.
Is it any wonder that the nation of India is one of the only to legally recognize three genders – male, female, hijra.
