A prayer wheel is a cylindrical wheel. With a mantra written in Tibetan language, on the outside of the wheel traditionally. The most commonly used is the mantra Om ma ni pad me hum. Also the eight auspicious symbols Ashtamangala. At the core of the cylinder is a “life tree”. Often made of wood or metal, with mantras written on or wrapped around it.
This particular one is with four symbols from Ashtamangala. Which includes:
1. Conch (śaṅkha) : represents the melodious, interpenetrating and pervasive sound of the dharma.
2. Endless knot (śrīvatsa) : a symbol of the ultimate unity of everything.
3. Parasol (chatraratna) : represents the protection from harmful forces and illness.
4. Victory banner (dhvaja) : represents the Buddha’s victory over the four māras, or hindrances in the path of enlightenment. These hindrances are pride, desire, disturbing emotions, and the fear of death.
The Ashtamangala is a sacred suite of Eight Auspicious Signs featured in a number of Indian religions such as Buddhism , Jainism, and Hinduism. Which includes: Dharma Wheel, lotus flowers, Auspicious drawing,Victory Banner, Precious umbrella, Vase of Treasure, Right-coiled conch, Golden Fish through out the body.
The first prayer wheels which are driven by wind, have been used since the fourth century. According to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition on the lineage texts, spinning a prayer wheel will have the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayers.
