Lava stupa have carved from Java. The shape of the stupa represents the Buddha, crowned and sitting in meditation posture on a lion throne. His crown isc the top of the spire; his head is the square at the spire’s base; the body is the vase shape; and his legs are the four steps of the lower terrace; and the base is his throne.
Religious building structures in the form of the Buddhist stupa, a dome shaped monument, started in India as commemorative monuments associated with storing sacred relics of the Buddha. Stupa were originally as pre-Buddhist tumuli in which śramaṇas were buried in a seated position called chaitya.
In Buddhism, circumambulation has been an important ritual and devotional practice. Stupas always have a path around them for circumambulation purpose.
