Description
Mid 19th Century two section Tansu Nong Bandaji wedding chests. Original Nickel hardware with four drawers along the upper part of each section. Four mirrored doors with upper storage area. Two doors below for larger storage space. The Korean name bandaji (means “half close”) derives from the hinged door in the front of this chest. This type of chest was one of the most essential pieces of furniture in a Korean household. Clothes, documents and valuables would be stored inside while folded blankets would be placed on top during the day (which is why we call it a “”blanket chest”” in English). This chest, with its richly decorated fittings and extensive metalwork, was produced in the northern provinces of the Korean peninsula.
This chest was part of a bride’s trousseau, her wedding dowry, collected pre-marriage so that the couple would have furniture to begin their life’s journey.Handmade paper lines the interior which was used to prevent fabric snags and repel insects.
In good condition. Originally from Korea.
