Description
Antique huge granite warrior figure from the Ming dynasty. Hand carved and used in royalty’s tomb as a guardian animal statue. These huge stone statues were placed on both sides of the spirit way that leads to the tomb.
36 (18 on each side) huge human and animal statutes including lions, elephants, camels, and horses, among others. 24 of them are animal statutes, while 12 are human statues lined the road, depending on the emperor’s scale. Some of the statutes are up to 30 cubic meters in volume.
During the ancient time, human labor still the only way to transport the sculptures. Sculptures in these sizes are much heavier than any cart, so they poured water on the road during the winter and it formed ice. then they hauled the piece forward by sliding on the slippery ice.
