During the Ming and Qing dynasties, imperial court members and wealthy families relied on the shoulü—an etched bronze hand warmer—to endure the winter cold. Carried easily inside long, flowing sleeves, this portable heater features a metal bowl, a swing handle, and a finely pierced lid designed to release gentle heat from burning charcoal embers.

More than a practical luxury, each shoulü reflected the refined taste of its owner. Artisans adorned the bronze exterior with delicate engravings of flowers, sweeping landscapes, and lucky motifs, such as the Fu (福) character representing fortune and blessing.
