Hand Carved High Quality Rangda Dance Mask Hair Black
$325.00
Description
This hand-carved and hand-painted wooden mask represents Rangda, a powerful figure in Balinese and Old Javanese tradition. The name “Rangda” is often interpreted as “widow,” and she is commonly associated with the Hindu goddess Durga, as well as the fierce warrior goddess Kali, embodying transformation, destruction, and protection.
Although Rangda is depicted as a fearsome figure, she is also regarded in Balinese belief as a protective force. Similar parallels are drawn with Kali in parts of northeastern India, where she is also worshipped as both a motherly and destructive divine energy. Rangda’s iconography—featuring white, black, and red—closely aligns with that of Kali and the goddess Chamunda, reflecting their shared symbolic themes.
Rangda is central to the legendary tale of Calon Arang and is also linked to the story of the exiled Javanese queen Mahendradatta. The dramatic battle between Barong and Rangda represents the eternal struggle between good and evil.
In Balinese culture, illness and misfortune are believed to arise from an imbalance between opposing spiritual forces. Ritual performances of the Barong and Rangda dance are therefore considered sacred ceremonies intended to restore harmony and maintain cosmic balance.
Originally from Bali, this mask reflects the rich spiritual and artistic traditions of Indonesian culture.
