Old Japanese Wooden Noh Mask – Hanakobu-akujoh
$385.00
Description
This is a Japanese Nohmen (Noh Theater mask) mask. Representing the fierce, supernatural character archetype of Hanakobu-akujoh (fearsome old man deity). Hand-carved from a single block of Japanese cypress (Hinoki), this piece showcases the highly refined artistic conventions of classical Japanese performance. The smooth, bald crown juxtaposed against the dramatic, cloud-like brow ridges (bairō) immediately signals a non-human, divine entity. The mask features a weathered, ochre-tinted complexion achieved through a traditional gofun (ground oyster shell paste) lacquer base, which has matured to show an authentic, mellowed patina with subtle age-cracking. It is further defined by a sharply down-turned, clenched mouth (Hesshimu) depicting a state of intense spiritual focus, and an imposing, long beard crafted from black horsehair or human hair (?)
Its bulging metallic eye inserts, a hallmark convention in Noh theater used exclusively to denote beings possessing immense supernatural vision and power. Rather than representing “evil” in a Western context, the Akujō mask embodies an overwhelming, awe-inspiring force, often utilized for roles depicting powerful mountain spirits, Shinto gods, or legendary demon-slayers. Dating from the early-to-mid 20th century (late Meiji to early Showa era).
A highly desirable and substantial collector’s item for antique Japanese art and theatrical memorabilia. Artist signature carved inside the mask. One of a kind and in great condition.
