What is a Kamidana?

A Kamidana is a miniature Shinto altar for homes and workplaces. It enshrines and honors a kami (deity or spirit). Mount it high on a clean, bright wall—above eye level—facing east or south. People typically place it in a living room, office, or dojo.

Core Components

Miyagata: A miniature wooden shrine box, typically made of Japanese cypress (hinoki).

Shintai: A physical object housing the kami, giving it a form for worship. Most commonly a small circular mirror, it can also be a magatama jewel or another symbolic item. Through a process called kanjō, worshippers obtain a portion of the kami (bunrei) from a shrine—usually representing a local deity or one tied to the owner’s profession.

Ofuda: A paper or wooden protective talisman from a public Shinto shrine (jinja) that holds the deity’s essence. Historically, these emblems (shinsatsu) represented local community kami, but modern practice favors higher-ranking deities (shinkai), typically via amulets from the Ise Grand Shrine.

Shingu: Daily offering vessels for water, rice, salt, sake, and evergreen sakaki sprigs.

Shimenawa & Shide: A sacred twisted rice straw rope with zig-zag paper streamers that marks the altar as a pure, sacred space.
