Old Japanese Tanzaku-Bako Tea Ceremony Chest -11
$585.00
Description
An antique Tanzaku-bako portable tea chest, complete with a full set of travel utensils for the Japanese tea ceremony. This item is in great condition—a wonderful piece for active practitioners or collectors of tea ceremony utensils.
A Tanzaku-bako is a tall, vertical chest crafted to store and transport the essential utensils for the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu). Unlike traditional flat or square Chabako that open from the top, the Tanzaku-bako stands roughly 20 to 21 inches high on a 7-inch square base, featuring a front-opening door for easy access to its interior shelves. Artisans typically build these portable cabinets from lightweight woods like paulownia (kiri) or cedar, fitting them with secure latches and handles so practitioners can comfortably carry their complete tea kit. Inside, a full set accommodates 7 to 10 compact utensils—including the Chawan (tea bowl), Mizusashi (fresh water jar), Kensui (waste water basin), Natsume (tea caddy), bamboo whisk (Chasen) and scoop (Chashaku), lid rest (Futaoki), water ladle (Hishaku), and incense container (Kōgō).
