Old Teak Day Bed

Old Javanese teak daybed. Fantastic carving work on teak wood. Solid heavy bed foot with colored and carved details as well. A very old traditional daybed with delicate work adapt in Chinese style from Chinese immigrants who move down to South East Asia before to post World War II .

Antique Chinese Alcove Wedding Bed. Wealthy families historically commissioned elaborate alcove beds, such as this wedding bed, as central pieces of a bride’s dowry. Functioning almost as a private room within the household, the bed features deep relief carvings, delicate latticework, and gold-lacquered accents depicting flora, fauna, and traditional symbols of harmony and fertility.

Artisans crafted these pieces from dense native hardwoods and regional softwoods—such as elm, rosewood, and zitan—often applying rich red and black lacquer finishes. Master woodworkers assembled these structures using traditional interlocking joinery, entirely foregoing metal nails.

Traditional Bed Styles:

Babu Bed (Bābù Chuáng, 八步床): A grand “eight-step” alcove bed featuring an outer gallery and decorative pillars, creating an enclosed sanctuary.

Luohan Bed (Luóhàn Chuáng, 羅漢床): A low-railed daybed with carved panels, designed for daytime lounging and receiving guests.

Kang Bed (Kàng Chuáng, 炕床): A low-platform bed traditionally positioned over a heated brick stove (kang) for warmth during cold winters.
