In most part of Asia, a Buddha statue with its left hand outstretched holding a bowl and the right hand in front of the chest represents the compassionate act of collecting alms and signifies the Buddha’s renunciation and care for all beings.
It’s important to understand that Buddhist monks, including the Buddha, do not beg for food. Instead, they collect alms, which provides an opportunity for those giving the alms to gain good karma (make merit). The alms bowl itself symbolizes the Buddha’s renunciation of material possessions and his reliance on the generosity of others. It can also represent his teachings and legacy, serving as a memorial to his encouragement of returning to one’s roots and the spiritual journey he promoted.
