Description

This striking Southeast Asian mask, originating from Myamar (Burmese) likely during the mid-20th century, is a magnificent example of traditional craftsmanship. Hand-carved from solid hardwood, this substantial piece was crafted either as a high-end prestige art piece or as a sacred altar object (Bucha). It features a brilliant finish of heavy gold gilded laid over a sculpted lacquer paste base, which has aged gracefully to reveal a beautiful, authentic patina alongside minor, character-defining wear on the nose and chin. The entire piece is ornately bordered by hand-cut Hman-zi Shwe-cha (gilded glass inlay) in vibrant red and green—a classic technique designed to brilliantly catch and reflect the light.

The mask is exceptionally unique due to its double-faced, tiered composition depicting characters from the epic Ramayana (Yama Zatdaw). The lower tier portrays a serene royal figure or deity, characterized by smooth golden skin, an elegant smile, and elongated earlobes rooted in traditional Buddhist aesthetics. Crowning this regal face is a fierce upper tier that depicts a wide-mouthed, sharp-toothed Bilu (ogre or demon) featuring prominent, bulging red glass eyes. This composite structure powerfully represents the fearsome image of the demon king Ravana. Balancing a complex hardwood construction with a rare dual-character motif, this piece stands out as a highly desirable and substantial collector’s item.

Unique one of a kind piece. In fairly good condition.
