An old Japanese shinto mikoshi (神輿) or omikoshi (お神輿; Japanese honorific prefix o- (お) ) shrine. Intricately built with all the details of a Japanese miniature palace and decorated with It was the vessel for the community’s god, a sacred religious palanquin (also translated as portable Shinto shrine). It serves as the vehicle to transport a deity in Japan while moving between main shrine and temporary shrine during a festival or when moving to a new shrine.
The tradition of carrying the mikoshi goes centuries back. One of the first recorded mentions of mikoshi took place in 794 A.D. in Kyushu, where the god of the Usa Hachiman Shrine was brought outside on a palanquin to ensure the safe construction of the Great Buddha at the Todaiji Temple.
