Antique Mokugyo Buddhist Temple Wooden Fish (Muyu)

The mokugyo (literally “wooden fish,” or muyu in Chinese) is a traditional East Asian percussion instrument deeply intertwined with Buddhist ritual practice. Originating in China and later integrated into the monastic traditions of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, this vessel drum is primarily used to maintain a steady cadence during the recitation of sutras, mantras, and sacred texts.

This particular antique specimen is exceptional for its monolithic construction, having been meticulously hand-carved from a single block of hinoki (Japanese cypress)—a wood revered in Japan for its durability, fine grain, and historic use in sacred temple architecture.
In practice, the mokugyo functions as a rhythmic anchor. Within the Zen (Chan) tradition, its steady beat regulates the tempo of communal chanting, while in Pure Land Buddhism, it accompanies the repetitive recitation of the name of Amitabha Buddha.

In a traditional temple setting, the mokugyo is traditionally positioned on the left side of the altar, visually and acoustically balancing the orin (metal singing bowl) on the right. To ensure acoustic clarity and protect the delicate hand-carved base, the instrument is customarily rested upon an ornate, embroidered silk cushion. This prevents the dampened, harsh tones that would otherwise occur if it were struck directly against a hard table or floor surface.
