Description
A masterfully hand-carved rectangular wooden panel featuring a central medallion of double koi fish encircled by a border of dynamic waves and majestic dragons, all framed within an ornate octagonal cloud border. The four corners are decorated with intricately carved bats—a traditional Chinese motif where the word for ‘bat’ (fú) phonetically mirrors the word for ‘blessings’ or ‘good fortune,’ infusing the piece with wishes for prosperity and success.
This hand-carved vintage wooden panel beautifully illustrates the “Dragon Gate” myth—a timeless symbol of resilience and success. According to Chinese folklore, a school of golden koi swam upstream against the fierce Yellow River until they hit the roaring Longmen (Dragon Gate) waterfall. While most gave up, a few determined koi spent a century leaping for the crest. Moved by this sheer willpower, the gods transformed the victorious fish into a magnificent celestial dragon. This legend inspired the famous idiom “Lǐ yú tiào lóng mén” (The carp leaps over the dragon gate), cementing the koi as a universal symbol of ambition, luck, and ultimate triumph.
