Description
Mid 19th century Bandaji cabinet. Original Brass hardware with four drawers along the upper section. As well as all the doors on the cabinet. Beautiful wood pattern throughout the whole cabinet, instead of shiny darker painted wood. This kind of delicate work is only seen on old cabinets. The Korean name bandaji (means “half close”) derives from the hinged door in the front of this chest. This type of chest was one of the most essential pieces of furniture in a Korean household. Clothes, documents and valuables would be stored inside while folded blankets would be placed on top during the day (which is why we call it a “”blanket chest”” in English). This altar style cabinet, with its decorated fittings and metalwork, was produced in the northern provinces of the Korean peninsula.
In good condition. Originally from Korea.
