Description
An old brass or bronze with copper repousse panel featuring lord Shiva, and attendants under an arch. Originally made in Tanjavur area in South India. The panel is constructed from two sheets, one with the repousse scene, and another flat back panel with an integral loop for suspension; the two sheets are conjoined and folded along the edges.
The image depicts a four-armed Shiva wearing a knee length garment with skulls along the hem. In each hand are attributes, including a sword and trident. At his side is a Ram, and the goddess Parvati. The ornate arch has two pillars surmounted with avian creatures. In the top corner of the panel is a recumbent cow, which represent his mount Nandi, and a Shiva lingam, symbols of Lord Shiva. A warm patina covers this devotional piece.
We are lucky to get four of these plaques from a private collector. Each is a delicate beautiful work. Kindly check the photographs for more details. Each one is hand made and one of a kind.
